To collect stats on how visitors interact with your website, the Smart Theme Analytics add-on uses Google Analytics reporting features.

So, before managing your Smart Theme Analytics add-on, you need to set up your Google Analytics account.

  1. Create a Google Analytics 4 property

  2. Add a custom dimension used by the add-on to understand what section types your visitors see and interact with

Please note that you need to have a Google Analytics 4 property to be able to make the most of the Smart Theme Analytics add-on. You won’t have to stop using your Universal Analytics. You can set up your site on both Google Analytics 4 and Universal Analytics you might currently use.

Google offers great step-by-step guides on how to do so. You can learn more about how Universal Analytics differs from Google Analytics 4 here. Read on about the new Google Analytics here.

Once you create a Google Analytics 4 property, you need to add the parameter that will help the Smart Theme Analytics add-on understand which section type your visitors saw and interacted with. To do so, go to your Google Analytics 4 property and find the All events tab in your left-hand panel.

In the top right corner, click the Manage Custom Definitions button.

Create a new custom dimension.

Add smart_theme_section_type in the Event parameter name field. The Custom dimension name will be populated automatically. Save changes.

You’ll see this parameter in the custom dimension tab. That’s it! Now the Smart Theme Analytics add-on can capture section types your visitors see and interact with.
